Lambay Whiskey partners with Skerries Sailing Club to sponsor the Progressive Union GP14 World championships in Skerries from Aug 11-14th.
Lambay Irish Whiskey Company prides itself on close roots to the sea, our maritime community and especially sea sports.
This year we are delighted to be one of the partners for the GP14 Progressive Union World Championships sailing from August 14th to 19th 2022 in Skerries, Co. Dublin.
Hosts Skerries Sailing Club is excited to be hosting this global event which last took place in Ireland in 1997 and memories of a great week are still alive by locals, club members & GP14s sailors that attended. The club is expecting in the region of 120-130 boats to enter and the sailors and locals are really in for a treat.
Boats from all over Ireland and the UK as well as competitors from as far as Australia, South Africa, Barbados, Ski Lanka and the USA will compete over for the week-long World Championship. The last Worlds was in Mount’s Bay in Cornwall in 2018 and has been postponed twice in Skerries in 2020 and 2021. Skerries have pedigree when it comes to GP14 world championships as the event was held there 25 years ago in 1997, an event which is still very fondly reminisced about by the older members of the fleet. It has been often described as the best GP Worlds ever and Skerries are hoping that they can repeat that memorable event.
This maritime competition boasts a top-class sailing fleet directly off the Harbour of Skerries along with many families and adventurers visiting and staying in Skerries' local area for the week-long event.
Some big names will be arriving in Ireland to compete including 5 times world champion Ian Dobson, multi-Endeavour Trophy winner, and multi-class world champion Nick Craig who is looking to put GP14 world champion on the list, past Topper and GP14 World Champion Neil Marsden amongst many others. Ireland will also be well represented. Top names such as 3 times Olympian and current GP14 National Champion Ger Owen. Ross Kearney a past Mirror World Champion who finished 2nd at the last GP14 worlds. There are plenty of other upcoming young sailors that will be looking to get into the mix. Peter Boyle from Sutton Dinghy Club has been showing some consistent form this year with 2nd in each event so far. He has ace crew (and dad) Stephen Boyle in the boat with him.
Lambay Whiskey will sponsor two races Thursday, Aug 11th, and offer prizes to all winners of the race along with welcome packs for each team entry. A selection of delicious Lambay Whiskey cocktails will also be offered from Skerries Sailing club throughout the week.
Off the water, a full social programme is being arranged at the club all week. The town is also awash with some great restaurants and local bars such as Blue, 5 Rocks, The Brick House. Joe Mays, Stoops and The Snug all will be pouring great Lambay Whiskey cocktail menus and delicious food.
What better way to create your perfect #lambaymoment while watching the sunset across the bay?
